🌿 Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Massage): An Overview

Abhyanga is a therapeutic massage in Ayurveda that involves the application of warm herbal oils to the body. It is not just a luxury or relaxation treatment — it is a daily ritual in Ayurveda for healing, rejuvenation, and balance of the body and mind.

🪔 Benefits of Ayurvedic Massage (Abhyanga)

  1. Balances the Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha):

    • The choice of oil depends on your dominant dosha.

    • Vata: Sesame or Ashwagandha oil

    • Pitta: Coconut or Brahmi oil

    • Kapha: Mustard or Eucalyptus oil

  2. Improves Circulation & Lymph Drainage:

    • Stimulates blood flow and removes toxins (ama) from tissues.

  3. Nourishes Skin & Tissues (Dhatus):

    • Deeply hydrates and strengthens skin, muscles, and joints.

  4. Reduces Stress and Fatigue:

    • Calms the nervous system and promotes better sleep (especially Vata-type disorders).

  5. Enhances Digestion:

    • Stimulates internal organs when done over the abdomen and back.

  6. Boosts Immunity (Ojas):

    • Supports immune function by improving vitality and reducing inflammation.

🪘 How Abhyanga is Done (Basic Steps)

  1. Warm the oil (to a comfortable temperature).

  2. Apply oil generously to the scalp, face, ears, neck, and whole body.

  3. Massage in circular motions on joints and long strokes on limbs.

  4. Leave oil for 15–30 minutes, allowing absorption.

  5. Take a warm shower or bath to rinse off excess oil.

🕉️ When to Do Abhyanga

  • Ideally in the morning, before a bath or shower.

  • Can be done daily, or at least 3 times a week.

  • Avoid when you have a fever, indigestion, skin infections, or during menstruation (for some women).
