Kati Basti
🪔 Ayurvedic Perspective on Kati Basti
Kati Basti is a specialized localized treatment in Ayurveda, where warm medicated oil is retained over the lower back (lumbar region) for a specific duration. Its primary aim is to pacify aggravated Vata dosha, reduce pain, and support healing in muscular and bone-related disorders.
According to Ayurveda, the lumbar region is dominated by Vata, and when Vata becomes imbalanced in this area, it causes back pain, stiffness, inflammation, bone degeneration, and muscular weakness. Kati Basti is highly beneficial in such conditions as it provides nourishment and warmth (Snigdha and Ushna qualities) directly to the affected area.
🔸 Procedure:
-
A well-like structure is made using dough (typically wheat flour) around the lower back.
-
Warm medicated oil (e.g., Dashamoola Taila, Narayana Taila, Mahamasha Taila) is slowly poured into the enclosure.
-
The oil is retained in that area for a specific period, allowing deep absorption into the tissues, muscles, and bones.
🔸 Benefits:
The warmth and herbal properties of the oil:
-
Improve local blood circulation
-
Pacify Vata dosha
-
Strengthen the muscles
-
Reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness
